This site has a large variety of documents. The most obvious issue for searching is that antebellum records (before the Civil War) only include the first names of enslaved people. So, while you might be searching for James Stacy in records from after the Civil War, you will be searching for James (or Jim) in the antebellum records. For that reason, there are special-purpose searches scattered throughout the site.
