Bryan County Chattel Mortgage (Hyme/Waller)

Enslaved People Named: Sambo, Pussy

On March 3, 1840, at Savannah, Peter G. Hyme used as collateral on a promissory bond of $526 to George Waller, Bryan County, “two negro slaves viz Sambo & Pussy.” Waller had acted as security for Hyme on an appeal in Chatham County Superior Court in which Philip R. Douglass was the plaintiff and Hyme the defendant. If Waller were to have to pay money in this case as security, he would be able to sell Sambo and Pussy, keep the amount he had to pay, and return any overage to Hyme. Recorded in Bryan County Superior Court on May 1, 1840.
