On September 8, 1831, Beecroft Penny, Bryan County, used as collateral on a promissory note of $4000 to John Miller, Savannah, “the following negro slaves namely July aged about twenty two years, Lemster aged about nineteen years, Jim aged about sixteen years, Billy aged about twelve years, Giney aged about twenty years, Catharine aged about twenty five years, Nelly aged seventeen and Bess thirty years old.” Witnessed by Robert M. Charlton. Recorded in Bryan County Superior Court on November 28, 1831.
