Enslaved People Named: Abel, Will, Maryan, Leah, Bellah, Abram, Kate, Ceasar [alt: Caesar], Mingo, Moses, Chloe, Mary, Strap, Brutus
On March 7, 1809, Liberty County Sheriff Josiah Wilson sold to James Smith for $3223 “the said fifteen negroes Viz. Abel, Will, Maryan [alt: Mary Ann], Leah, Bellah, Abram, Kate, Ceasar [alt: Caesar], Mingo, Moses, Chloe, Mary, Strap, & Brutus.” Wilson had seized these fifteen people from Paul Grimball after a writ of fieri facias was obtained against him based on a suit by Oliver Sturgiss, [word], Rod. McCleod and William McCluse in Liberty County Superior Court. He sold them at public auction and Smith was the highest bidder. Witnessed by D. Stewart, John Stewart.
On the same day, James Smith transferred his rights to these individuals to Paul Grimball in trust for Sarah Grimball, Paul Chapline Grimball, William Grimball, Isaac Perkins Grimball and any other child Paul Grimball might have with Sarah Grimball. This was followed by a deed of sale recording that Paul Grimball, “late of the said County planter,” had paid James Smith $3223 for Abel, Will, Maryan, Leah, Bellah, Abram, Kate, Ceasure, Mingo, Moses, Chloe, Mary, Strap & Brutus, and that they were to be kept in trust for Grimball’s named children as stated above. Witnessed by D. Stewart, John Stewart. Recorded in Liberty County Superior Court on June 9, 1809.
