On March 15, 1854, John Pray Maxwell, Bryan County, used as collateral on a promissory note to Aaron Champion for $1240 “the following named negro slaves to wit August about (50) fifty years of age Nanny [or Nancy] about forty (40) years of age Patty about seventeen (17) years of age and ? Petter ? [Peter?] about forty eight (48) years of age.” Witnessed by John E. Ward. Recorded in Bryan County Superior Court on May 25 , 1854.
