On March 1, 1849, Ann E. Powers, Effingham County, sold to Joshua Smith, Bryan County, for $450 “one certain negro man named August about forty seven or eight years old.” Witnessed by William Cooper, Valeria Cooper. Recorded in Bryan County Superior Court on March 13, 1849.
