Enslaved People Named: Rachel, Sopha, Lydia, John
On January 9, 1852, at Savannah, W.W. Johnston sold to Solomon Smith for $1350 “my negro woman and her three children, viz Rachel, Sopha [alt: Sophia?], Lydia, and John, with their future increase, all sound on delivery except Rachel’s eyes are inflamed from cold.” Recorded in Bryan County Superior Court on May 16, 1853. [NOTE: The county of residence of either party was not specified. The fact that it was recorded in Bryan County, even though the sale took place in Savannah, suggests that Solomon S. Smith resided there.]
