Enslaved People Named: Daniel
In 1852, an enslaved man named Daniel who had been part of the estate of Lewis Hines, Bryan County, was sold to one of the heirs, James C. Hines, by the other heirs.
On April 2, 1852, Ann M. Hines, Benjamin T. Hines, Lewis E. Hines, Thomas A. Hines and Georgia C. Hines, of Bryan County, each sold to James C. Hines of Chatham County for $75.72 their right and title “a negro man named Daniel about twenty six years of age, five feet two or three inches high, and of dark yellow complexion, who is sold by Charlton Hines, executor of Estate of Lewis Hines, for the purpose of effecting a division among the heirs of said estate.” Witnessed by John P. Hines, J.I.C.
In a separate record dated April 12, 1852 in Newton County, John P. Mell, Newton County, sold to James C. Hines of Chatham County for $72.72 “all the right title and interest acquired by my wife (formerly Mary J. Hines) in a certain negro man, named Daniel, about twenty six years of age and about five feet two or three inches high and of dark brown complexion, sold by Charlton Hines executor of Estate of Lewis Hines to effect a division among the heirs of said estate.”
Both records recorded in Bryan County Superior Court on May 1, 1852.
On March 6, 1852, Charlton Hines, executor for the estate of the late Lewis Hines of Bryan County, sold Daniel for $298.88 to James C. Hines of Savannah, who was also one of the heirs, on behalf of the four minor heirs of the estate: Euterpe Hines, Victoria A. Hines, Edward H. Hines and Caroline Hines.. Charlton Hines noted that “the interest in [Daniel] had never been divided between the heirs of said estate” and that it was considered best to sell him in a private sale, with the approval of the adult heirs and a January 12, 1852, Liberty County Court of Ordinary decision.
