On May 3, 1853 Thomas Blitch, in charge of the estate of James Hunt of Effingham County, sold at auction “a certain man Slave named John about twenty years of age belonging to the estate of said James Hunt, dec’d.” Blitch had received permission for the sale from the Effingham County Superior Court, sitting in Equity, during its March term, 1853, and had given legal notice of the sale in the Savannah Republican newspaper. Solomon Smith, Bryan County, was the highest bidder at $910. Witnessed by Fred. Hinely, Jamaes Rahn. Thomas Blitch signed by mark (indicating illiteracy). Recorded in Bryan County Superior Court on May 16, 1853.
