Chatham County Will – Job Pray

In the name of God Amen I Job Pray of Savannah in Chatham County being in perfect mind memory and understanding do make this my last Will and Testament.

First I desire my Debts funeral expenses and the legacies hereinafter mentioned to be paid and discharged as soon as the affairs of my Estate will permit.

Item. I give to Mrs. Mary Turpin of the City of Charleston the sum of twenty pounds sterling.

Item. I give the Church Wardens of Christ Church Parish for the use of the Church five pounds.

Item. I give devise and bequeath my estate real & personal after payment of debts legacies & funeral expenses as aforesaid unto my two sons “John and William Pray” their heirs and assigns forever to be divided between them & held in the same manner for the same estates as they had taken it under the act for distribution of intestate estates.

Lastly I nominate and appoint John Habersham Samuel Stirk and Nathaniel Pendleton Esquires to be Executors of this my will and I give them full power to convey & dispose of my lands or other effects for payment of my debts.

In witness whereof I have here unto set my hand & seal this first day of January one thousand and seven hundred & eighty nine. The words “John & William Pray” being first interlined. I also add this bequest by way of codicil viz ten pounds to the Grnd lodge of Savannah.

Signed sealed published and declared by the said Job Pray the testator as and for his last Will and Testament who subscribed the same in our presence, we in his presence do subscribe & attest the same as witnesses thereto.

[Jacob Wood probated the signatures and referred to Catherine Greene as Mrs. Catherine Greene on June 26, 1789. Samuel Stirk was said to qualify as acting executor, the other executors named having refused to act in that capacity.
