Marriage Contract (Maxwell/Burroughs)

Enslaved People Named: Patty, Henry

On July 20, 1837, Ann Constant Maxwell, Savannah, and Oliver Sturges Burroughs, Savannah, entered into a marriage contract with her trustees William McWhir Maxwell and John Pray Maxwell, Bryan County. A trust was created, into which was put “the following two negro slaves to wit, Patty and her child Henry,” and any future property she might come to possess. The trust specified that Oliver Sturges Burroughs was not to have any rights or control over the trust property, and it was to be administered as a separate estate, to be inherited by their children. Witnessed by Jno. [John] M.B. Harden, Edward J. Harden, G.W. Galphin. Recorded in Bryan County Superior Court on January 8, 1838.
