Bryan County Marriage Settlement (Maxwell)

Enslaved People Named: Adam, Venus, Caesar, Sary, Sandy, Isaac, Flora, Cate, Jacob, Eve, Lydia

On September 28, 1837, William M. Maxwell, Bryan County, put in trust for his wife, Ann M. Maxwell, “the following negroe slaves to wit Adam, Venus, Caesar, Sary, Sandy, Isaac, Flora, Cate, Jacob, Eve and Lydia.” Her trustees were John P. Maxwell and George W. Galphin, also of Bryan County. The trust was to last for his wife’s lifetime, and then to be inherited by her children by him as tenants in common, not as joint tenants. Witnessed by A.W. Stephen, Jno [John] S. Maxwell. Recorded in Bryan County Superior Court on November 2, 1837.
