On June 6, 1838, Lewis Hines, Bryan County, used as collateral on a promissory note of $6267.95 to “the trustees of the meeting house, on the Neck Road, near Hardwick in the County of Bryan,” “the following named slaves being twenty nine in number, viz Luke, Molly, Andrew, Doll, Anthony, Judy, Paul, Nancy, Jinnett, Jim, Die [alt: Dye], little Nancy, William, Flora, Frank, Prince, Jack, Flanders, Antoinette, Tony, Maria, Cain, old Paul, Charlotte, Edward, Rose, Josephine, Sue and Chance.” Witnessed by Mos. [Moses] Sheftall, Sen’r. Recorded in Bryan County Superior Court on June 28, 1838.
