Enslaved People Named: Phillis, Jim

On October 17, 1839, at Savannah, Charles H. Starr, Bryan County, sold for $400 to Edwin P. Starr, Charleston, South Carolina, “a negro woman slave named Phillis [alt: Phyllis],” while reserving to himself “the priviledge of redeeming the said negro woman slave Phillis at any time whatever by paying unto the said Edwin P. Starr the above mentioned sum of four hundred dollars.” Witnessed by Robt. [Robert] Webb. Recorded in Bryan County Superior Court on May 1, 1840.

On the same day, in a separate deed record, Charles H. Starr sold to Edwin P. Starr for $600 “a negro man slave named Jim,” under the same condition.
