On July 3, 1835, Fathia Shuman gifted to her son James Shuman “a negro boy named John between ten and fourteen years of age.” [NOTE: Fathia Shuman signed by mark, indicating illiteracy.] Witnessed by William English. Recorded in Bryan County Superior Court on January 11, 1836.
