On February 28, 1835, George W. Galphin, physician of Bryan County, used as collateral on a promissory note of $1000 to Maria J. McIntosh “the following negro slaves to wit John, Will, Martha, Priscilla and child Rachel and child Sam Amy Edmund and Sib…” If he defaulted on the note, Maria J. McIntosh was to be able to take them into her possession and to sell them, returning any extra amount to him. Recorded in Bryan County Superior Court on May 6, 1835.
