Enslaved People Named: Hagar, Johnny, Sampson, Henny, Polydore, Matilda, Binah, Tom, Mary
On August 24, 1831, Edward Footman, planter of Bryan County, gifted to Mary C. Footman, the widow of his brother Richard H. Footman, a deceased doctor of medicine of Liberty County, “the negroes…Hagar and her children Johnny & Sampson, Henny & her children Polydore [alt: Polidore] & Matilda, Binah, Tom & Mary.” Edward Footman said he had purchased these individuals from Richard H. Footman for $2520 on April 10, 1824, as recorded in Bryan County Clerk’s Office in Book D, page 208 on July 21, 1824.
Edward Footman noted that Richard H. Footman had died leaving his widow Mary “and the following children namely Elizabeth C. Footman, Richard H. Footman, Maria H. Footman, Margaret W. Footman & Mary W Footman” “in indigent circumstances” and stated that the gift was in trust for the use of Mary C. Footman while she remained single, and after her death or marriage in trust to be divided equally among the surviving children.
