Deed of Gift (Brown/Brown)

Enslaved People Named: Toby, Joe, Clarice, Jane, Middy

On December 26, 1788, Francis Brown, Georgia, gifted to his daughter Margaret Brown “the following property (that is to say) my two young Negroe fellows Toby and Joe, together with my three young wenches Clarice Jane and Middy and all their increase, also ten cows and ten ewes and one ram, and also my plantation whereon I now reside until my son Washington attains to the years of twenty one, at which time the above said plantation together with the above said three negroes Joe, and Jane and Middy and all their increase shall become his.” Later in the deed, Brown gave his son’s full name as Washington Brown and said that if he were to die before the age of 21, all the described property was to become his daughter Margaret’s alone. Witnessed by Samuel Lines, Thomas E. Law, Bartholomew Farrow [alt: Farrar]. Probated by Farrow on January 26, 1797. Recorded in Liberty County Superior Court on January 30, 1797.
