Enslaved People Named: Hannah, Phillis

On August 23, 1796, in McIntosh County, Sarah Sarah Burgess, administratrix of Joseph McLean’s estate, stated that she had pointed out to the sheriff property of McLean’s to be sold to satisfy a demand by the administrator of Bishop’s estate: “one wench named Hannah about 50 years of age one wench named Phillis about 40 years of age 200 hundred [sic] acres of pine land situate on the north side of Little Sapelo McIntosh County & bounded on all sides by vacant land at time survey a table 2 bedsteads 2 pots and a few other articles of kitchen furniture.” This property was sold at public auction by James Mulryne, Sheriff of McIntosh County, on the first Tuesday in October 1795 for $88 to the highest bidders (not identified). Recorded in Liberty County Superior Court on April 17, 1797.
