Comments: Appraisal and division performed at the request of the heirs of Isham Clay, formerly of Chatham County, so that “Mary Harris, late Mary Clay, niece of the said Isham, now of age & married, may receive her proportion of the estate.” She drew lot #1.

“The above negro wench named Charlotte, and her children originally belonged to Isham Clay; and at his death the said negroes were given to his widow and child, Mary Clay. Robert Sallens married the widow Clay, and was in possession of the property until his death; and the administrator on Sallens’s Estate appraised said negroes, through mistake, as Robert Sallens’s property, but finding Mary Clay, the lawful heir of Isham Clay, to be possessed of a legal right to one moiety of the property, the administrator, with the assistance of three freeholders, appraised and divided these negroes, which enabled Mary Clay to receive one third of the property, which she was satisfied to receive as her proportion.”
