Enslaved People Named: Phillis, Harry

On March 5, 1822, Liberty County Sheriff John Stewart sold to Joseph Austin for $1055 “two certain negroes, named Phillis and Harry.” Stewart had seized them from Peter Farley Winn, based on foreclosure of a mortgage between him and Jesse Ham, who had sued him in Liberty County Inferior Court. Sheriff Stewart put them up for public auction at the courthouse in Riceborough, and Austin was the highest bidder. Witnessed by Joseph Jones. Recorded in Liberty County Superior Court on April 25, 1822.
