Enslaved People Named: Lucy

On March 5, 1822, Liberty County Sheriff John Stewart sold to William Robarts for $455 “a certain female slave named Lucy.” Stewart had seized her from William H. Cassels, administrator of the estate of Thomas Baker, based on a writ of fieri facias obtained through a lawsuit against the estate by John Stewart, administrator of the John Cocke estate in Liberty County Inferior Court. He put her up for public auction at the Riceborough courthouse on March 5, 1822, and Robarts was the highest bidder. Witnessed by U. [Uriah] Wilcox. Recorded in Liberty County Superior Court on March 18, 1822.
