Enslaved People Named: Chloe, Fortune, Diana, Abram, Dorcas, Sue

On July 1, 1818, Benjamin Mell Senior, planter of Liberty County, used as collateral on a promissory note of $248.62 to Uriah Wilcox, yeoman of Liberty County, “the six following negro slaves, with the increase of the females, viz. A wench named Chloe, & her five children named Fortune, Diana, Abram, Dorcas & Sue.”   Mell had originally given this note to Hermon Hoadley on July 8, 1817, and Hoadley had endorsed it over to Wilcox. Witnessed by Hermon Hoadley, John S. Mell. Recorded in Liberty County Superior Court on July 4, 1818. 

On February 3, 1820, it was recorded that this mortgage had been paid in full as of January 20, 1820.
