Marriage Contract (Houston/Croft)

On July 23, 1817, Robert James Houston, planter of Chatham County, entered into a marriage contract with Harriet Elizabeth Croft, spinster of Liberty County, naming John Stacy and Thomas Goulding as her trustees. Harriet’s property, consisting of “two tracts of land, situate in Liberty County, three lots in the town of Sunbury, and ten acres of land adjoining said Town, and also fifty one negro slaves, by inheritance from the estate of her father, John Croft deceased,” was put into trust for her. According to the terms of the trust, Robert James Houston was to have the right to sell any of the property, as long as he and the trustees felt it in the best interests of the parties involved. Witnessed by Hetty McIntosh, Pat. Houstoun. Recorded in Liberty County Superior Court on May 18, 1818.
