Marriage Contract (Mell/Stewart)

Enslaved People Named: Fortune, Old Die, Die, Hannah, Abby, Rachel, William

On January 28, 1818, William H. Mell, merchant of Liberty County, and Miss Sarah Elizabeth Stewart, daughter of Josiah Stewart, deceased, entered into a marriage contract, naming Nathaniel Law and Joseph Law, also of Liberty County, as her trustees.  Put into trust for her were “the following property; to wit, Fortune, Old Die, Die, Hannah, Abby, Rachel & William, making seven slaves, together with all the future increase of the female slaves, to be & continue the property of the said Elizabeth Stewart,” as well as any other property she brought into the marriage or came to obtain in the future. Witnessed by Luke Mann, Samuel Jones Jr. Recorded in Liberty County Superior Court on April 14, 1818.
