Bill of Sale (Gildersleeve/Rogers)

Enslaved People Named: Minda, Adam, Rose, Sally, Jacob

Reverend Cyrus Gildersleeve, of Bloomfield, New Jersey, formerly of Liberty County, Georgia, sold to Charles William Rogers  “the following negro slaves, viz. Minda, Adam & Rose, Sally and Jacob.” The deed specified that the named enslaved individuals had been the property of Renchie Gildersleeve, the deceased former wife of Rev’d Gildersleeve, which called into question Gildersleeve’s title to them. Therefore,  Cyrus Gildersleeve Jr, William C. Gildersleeve and Mary Valveria Gildersleeve also released their title to them to Charles William Rogers in the presence of John Dodd, a Judge of the Inferior Court of Common Pleas for the County of Essex, on January 13, 1817. Recorded in Liberty County Superior Court on May 19, 1817.
