Enslaved People Named: Smart

On February 29, 1811, articles of agreement were made between Charles Dicks and Jesse Ham of Liberty County “that the said Chs. Dicks do agree to deliver the said Jesse Ham a certain fellow named Smart to hold for the space of one month for the use of three hundred & nineteen dollars advanced on his account.” Smart was to be returned to Dicks if he repaid the money; otherwise, Ham would keep him.
