Used as Collateral (Dowse/Rogers)

Enslaved People Named: Peter, Delia, Hannibal, Cambridge

On January 1, 1810, Samuel Dowse, Liberty County, used as collateral on a promissory note for $400 to Charles William Rogers, “practitioner of Physic” in McIntosh County, “the two following Negroe Slaves named Peter and Delia.” Dowse agreed that Rogers could put Peter and Delia up for public auction if he did not meet the terms of the note. 

A note was written on the deed to say that before it was signed, the named “Hannibal and Cambridge” were erased and the names Peter and Delia were inserted instead. 

Recorded in Liberty County Superior Court on February 5, 1810. 

Written on the deed was “Satisfaction rec’d 20th Feby 1816. [Signed] Chas. W. Rogers. Entered 25 April 1816 E. Baker Clk.”
