Enslaved People Named: Hetty

On September 3, 1794, James Smith, of Liberty County, gifted to his sister Elizabeth Mary Ann Smith “one mulatto girl by name Hetty…under the following condition /viz/ during her life, and immediately after the sd [said] Elizabeth M.A. Smith’s death, the sd mulatto girl /by name Hetty/ shall revert back as the property of the aforesaid Jas. Smith” should he survive Elizabeth, and immediately after “the death of each (the sd Jas Smith and Elizabeth M.A. Smith) the sd Mulattoe girl Hetty shall be free, her and her issue, for ever, without any manner of claim, challenge or demand whatsoever.“ The deed noted that James Smith had delivered possession of Hetty that day. Witnessed by ? J? Smith, Sarah Smith. Recorded in Liberty County Superior Court on January 22, 1796.
