Enslaved People Named: Ruth

On May 2, 1808, Liberty County Sheriff Josiah Wilson sold “a certain negroe wench named Ruth, the property of the said Margaret Corker,” to Morgan Mara for Joseph Bevan for $267. Ruth had been seized from Mrs. Corker based on a writ of fieri facias obtained based on a suit by Joseph Bevan against Mrs. Corker in Liberty County Inferior Court. Ruth was put up for public auction  at the Riceboro Courthouse on the first Tuesday of the previous March, and Mara (on behalf of Bevan) was the highest bidder. Recorded in Liberty County Superior Court on May 6, 1808.
