Estate Settlement (Law/Law)

Enslaved People Named: Gib, Carolina, Rachel, Maryann, Rose

On February 22, 1806, Joseph, Benjamin and Samuel S. Law, administrators of the estate of Joseph Law, Senior, turned over to Thomas E. Law 1/7th part of the Joseph Law estate, as one of the heirs, on the condition that he be responsible for up to 1/7th part of the estate’s debts. This 1/7th part included “the following Negro Slaves, to wit, Gib, Carolina, Rachel, Maryann, Rose & [left blank], as well as 1/7th part of a tract of land known as Liberty Point, bounded on one side by the Newport River marsh, west by land of Thomas Young, and on another side by land of Thomas E. Law. Because Thomas E. Law had already sold [his portion of] Liberty Point to Nathaniel Law, he agreed to mortgage the tract of land he was living on, known as Tiger Swamp, as security against the estate’s debts. It was identified as being bounded south by the South NewPort River’s marshes, east by land of Nathaniel Law, West by land of the Estate of West. Witnesssed by Edward W. North, William Dunham. Recorded in Liberty County Superior Court on February 3, 1807.
