On January 9, 1805, James White, planter of Liberty County and Sarah D., his wife, used as collateral on a promissory note of $1355.48 to Edward Harden, Chatham County, a 130-acre tract of land on Colonels Island, Liberty County, bounded east by the Newport River marshes, north by Barney’s land, south by the Newport River, and “also the following five Negro Slaves viz, August, Yellow Elsey [alt: Elsy], Black Elsey, Tamur [alt: Tamer] and George…” Witnessed by William Davies, John Macpherson Berrien. Recorded in Liberty County Superior Court on January 23, 1805.
