On February 1, 1803, at Sunbury, James Holmes, merchant of Liberty County, relinquished his claim to certain debts and judgments against the estate of John Kell. He said he had purchased the debts with the intent of having the property sold, and after repaying an amount advanced to him, dividing the balance between himself, John Kell, and Mrs. Rees as heirs “& representatives” of the Kell estate. Since the property was then entirely in his name, he worried that his intent might not be fulfilled if he were to die, so he relinquished his claim to the property divided to him and named in an annexed document in favor of John Kell and Mrs. Rees.
