Enslaved People Named: Sue
On December 1, 1805, Liberty County Deputy Sheriff Edward Harville put Sue up for public auction. Sue and others belonging to the estate of the late Dr. Johnston had been named in a mortgage given by Johnston to Paul Grimball, which had evidently gone under foreclosure. Mrs. Elizabeth Johnson was the highest bidder at $450. Witnessed by Joseph Jones. Recorded in Liberty County Superior Court on January 15, 1806. [NOTE: The name “Sue” was difficult to read and may be wrong. Also, “Johnston” was also spelled Johnson in this deed. Based on a later deed, it appears that Mrs. Elizabeth Johnson was Dr. George Johnson’s widow.”]
