Manumission (Steuart)

Enslaved People Named: Eleanorah, Haratia, Carolinus, Eletitia

On February 25, 1799, James M. Steuart of Liberty County manumitted and set free “my four following Slaves Viz. Eleonorah, Haratia [alt: Horatia], Carolinus and Eletitia hereby relinquishing all my right title and ownership in and to the said Slaves and forever dissolving the relationship of Master and Servant between myself and them the said Elenorah, Haratia, Carolinus and Eletitia and hereby granting them all the liberties and priviledges which free negroes and mulattoes are entitled to by the laws of the said State.” James M. Steuart also appointed Josiah Steuart and Charles Steuart as trustees and guardians to “slaves manumitted as within declared.” Witnessed by Wm. [William] Lambright. Recorded in Liberty County Superior Court on July 12, 1799.
