On August 1791, Mary Shepherd, widow of William Shepherd, used as collateral on a promissory note of 196 pounds to John Couper of merchant of North Newport Bridge, Liberty County, “all these Negro Slaves Named Primus, Phebe [alt: Phoebe], Silvia and Peter, with the future issue and increase of the female slaves…” Witnessed by Thomas Lanchester, John Paten. Recorded in Liberty County Superior Court on Setpember 16, 1791. [NOTE: Marked as satisfied in full as of May 30, 1792.] [NOTE: Mary Shepherd’s name also spelled as Shepheard in this record.]
