On June 28, 1787, James Belcher, gentleman of Savannah, and Grace Carr, widow of Liberty County, entered into a marriage contract. William Stephens of Savannah was her trustee. Because Grace Carr owned “twenty nine negroe slaves” and “sundry tracts and parcels of land,” in addition to cattle and household furniture at the time of the marriage, they were put into trust for her. The 29 people were identified as “Prince, Dick, Ned, Harry, Boston, Dublin, Toney, Cork, Newton, Buck, York, Affy [alt: Affee], Tenah, Dinah, Jenny, Cornelia, [hard to read, looks like ?enah but first letter is not T], D???y [looks like Dosey but faded], Candace, Jemima, Lucey [alt: Lucy], Esther, Charlotte, Sarah, Peg, Hannah, Pompey, Charles, and Gibb.” The land was said to be a 450-acre tract in Liberty County, bounded by land belonging to Peter Donworth, Joel Walker, Nathaniel [possibly Saxton], and a 150-acre tract on the Newport River in Liberty County called Burnetts Bluff. The property was to be maintained for the benefit of Grace Carr and James Belcher after their marriage. One half of the estate was to be for Grace Carr to leave in her last will and testament, and the other half for James Belcher to do the same. Witnessed by Mary Morel and Benj. [Benjamin] Morel. Recorded in Liberty County Superior Court on October 23, 1787.
