Enslaved Persons Named: Tom

The following deeds were recorded in Liberty County Superior Court on February 9, 1793:

“I do hereby certify that the bearer Tom is a free man having been freed by his Master Simon [see note] Before his Death several years ago Given under my hand at Savannah first March Seventeen hundred and Eighty two.” [Signed] David Montague

[NOTE: Unfortunately the surname above was difficult to read. It appeared to be Reuvers or Rouvers, but other names are possible. Please see the original in the link below.] 

“State of Georgia, Liberty County } These are to certify that a certain negro named Tom has by Information of Mr. David Delegal been brought before me as a vagrant and an Examination find the said Tom to be in the Imploy [SIC, employ] of Mr. Davis by the Year. Therefore the said free Tom are discharged and released from the Custody of the Constable and all others concerned Given under my hand at Liberty Point this thirty first July Seventeen hundred and Eighty Nine.” [Signed] Hepworth Carter, J.P.
