On May 18, 1827, Samuel S. Law, Liberty County, used as collateral on a promissory note of $698.29 to Furman R. Whitwell, also of Liberty County, “the following four negro slaves, to wit, Goliah, Peggy, and her two children, Joe and Nancy.” Witnessed by P.D. Hathaway. Recorded in Liberty County Superior Court on June 7, 1827.
