Marriage Contract (Collins-Lambright/McIver)

Enslaved Persons Named: Phillis, Lucy, Tom, Abraham [or Abram]

On June 23, 1814, in Barnwell District, South Caroline, Martha E. Collins and James Lambright entered into a marriage contract, with Stephen Smith and George W. Collins as her trustees. Put into trust for her was the property she brought into the marriage: “one negro woman Phillis, one negro girl Lucy, one negro boy Tom, and one other negro boy Abraham, together with the future increase of the said females.”  Witnessed by James Wilson, G. Robison Jun.,  Doctor Wilson Brown. Probated by G. Robison Jun. On November 28, 1814, and recorded in “Book of Miscellaneous Records C,” page 139, on November 30 1814. Recorded in Liberty County Superior Court on March 22, 1826.

On [date and month left blank] 1826, Martha Smith Lambright and Alexander Munro McIver entered into a marriage contract, with George W. Collins and Joseph Law Senior as her trustees. “Whereas the said Martha M. Lambright is entitled to a personal estate in the County aforesaid [Liberty County] of three negro slaves, namely, Tom, Lucy & Abram, which estate it hath been agreed shall be settled upon the uses and trusts hereinafter mentioned,” the three named people were put into trust for her. Witnessed by Nathaniel Law. Recorded in Liberty County Superior Court on March 23, 1826.
