Marriage Contract (Baker/McGowen)

Enslaved Persons Named: Sam, Patty, Nanny, Tenah, Miley, Sue, Dick, Willoughby, Grace, Diana, Polydore, Jennet, Nanny

On February 15, 1826, Harriet Rebecca Baker and Joseph Francis McGowen entered into a marriage contract, with William N. Way and William Q. Baker as her trustees. Put into trust for her was the Liberty County property she was bringing into the marriage, “consisting of thirteen negro slaves, namely, Sam, Patty, and her children, Nanny, Tenah and Miley; Sue, and her children, Dick, Willoughby [alt: Willowby], Grace, Diana and Polydore; and Jennet and her child Nanny.” Witnessed by Joseph Norman, Mary Way. Recorded in Liberty County Superior Court on March 26, 1826.
