On February 20, 1826, Joseph Edward Maxwell confirmed that he had received from C.O. Screven “the portion of negroes I am entitled to in right of my wife Sarah, viz from the estate of David G. Holms, for which C.O. Screven was administrator, as by division of said estate fell to my wife Sarah, viz. John, Trim, Affee, Amey, Will, Isaac, Israel, Miley, William, Peggy, Cinda, Old Margaret, Patrick, Leander, Peter, Moses, Robin, Old Warney, Old Sambo, Old Lucy, Old June, in all twenty one negroes. And by said right, having received of the said C.O. Screven, Executor of the estate of S. Butler, as by division of the estate fell to my wife Sarah, viz. Old Ben, Minty, Flora, Young Ben, Abram, Eve, Young Minty, Balaam, Moses (infant), Charlotte, Scipio, Old Charlotte, Anthony, Betty, Isaac, Abner, Priscilla, William, Charles, Charlotte, Fanny, Elsy, Cuffee, David, in all twenty four negroes. And by said right, having received of the said C.O. Sceven, from estate of Joseph Holms, as by division of that estate, fell to my wife Sarah, for whom said C.O. Screven acted as guardian, viz. Old August, Peter, Binah, Little Peter, Lucy, Louisa, Phoebe, Old Nero, in all right negroes: now be it known, that I, Joseph E. Maxwell, will assume, and by these present do assume, all debts now exiting against my wife Sarah, in either the above interests, so far as she is personally concerned.” Maxwell bound himself to bear the expenses of any suits brought against the estates for debts without cost or expense fto C.O. Screven. He agreed that he would turn over the said enslaved people, including their increase, to satisfy any such debts. He discharged Screven from his administration of the estate of David G. Holms, from his being guardian to Sarah Holms, and executor to the estate of S. Butler. Screven was also given the unsold and unappropriated part of the crop of the year 1825 to use to pay any estate debts. Recorded in Liberty County Superior Court on February 23, 1826.
