On April 5, 1825, “a certain negro slave named Sam” was sold at auction in front of the Liberty County courthouse at Riceboro to the highest bidder, who was Jesse Ham. Sam had been seized from his home on property belonging to the estate of Thomas Stevens by Liberty County Sheriff Edward Way to satisfy two judgments against the estate, one obtained by William Robarts in the Liberty County Superior Court, and the other by John O. Baker in the Liberty County Inferior Court. The sheriff recorded the sale Sam to Ham for $375 on April 28, 1825. Recorded in Liberty County Superior Court on June 9, 1825.
