Enslaved Persons Named: Louisa, Josefine

On June 21, 1837, R.S. Leonard, merchant of Liberty County, used as collateral on a promissory note of $1200 to J.S. Fleming “a certain female Slave named Louisa and her daughter named Josefine [alt: Josephine], together with their future issue & increase.”

Also used as collateral was a 34-acre tract of land in Walthourville, Liberty County, with a dwelling house and various other buildings, the current residence of R.S. Leonard, bounded on the north by Mrs. Minto and James W. Winn’s land, on the west and south by lands of Thomas Quarterman and on the east by lands of George W. Walthour, plus two adjoining tracts of land about three miles from Riceborough, one of them 229 acres purchased y Jesse Cooper from James C. Phelps, the other with 320 acres purchasted by Cooper from Benjamin Mell. Both of them had been purchased by Leonard from Cooper, and were bounded on the east and north by lands of Peter W. Fleming and Thomas Quarterman, on the west and south by lands of Jonathan Bacon and the estate of Thomas Baker.

Witnessed by U. Wilcox, G.D. Beckwith. Uriah Wilcox probated the deed on June 27, 1837. Recorded in Liberty County Superior Court on on July 12, 1837.
