Used as Collateral (Wheeler/Spencer)

Enslaved Persons Named: Abram

On March 9, 1836, Robert J. Wheeler, Liberty County, used as collateral on a promissory note of $425.33 to Uriah Wilcox, Liberty County, “a certain male slave named Abram and the one half of my crop of cotton which may be made the present year…” Because William Spencer, Liberty County, had acted as security for the note, Wheeler mortgaged Abram and the cotton to him to be “exposed to public sale to pay said note with interest” if he did not repay it. Recorded in Liberty County Superior Court on March 17, 1836. [NOTE: Marked satisfied in full by William Spencer as of January 23, 1837. Satisfaction recorded on January 27, 1837.]
