On January 12, 1836, Samuel Spencer, planter of Liberty County, used as collateral on a promissory note of $24000 to John O. Baker, also of Liberty County “the following negro slaves, forty nine in number, and named as follows Die, Titus, Miley, Billey [or Belley], Sary, Bella, Peggy, Sam, Cinda, Nancy, Susan, Cloe [alt: Chloe], Betty, Dianna, Catty [alt: Katie, Katy, Cate], Sam, Betty, Will, Harriett, Clarissa, Venus [alt: Venus], Elisa, Elcy [alt: Elsy, Elcey], Prince, Jane, Peggy, Tom, Old Patty, Jeffry [alt: Jeffry], Bella, Negar [alt: Neger], also Jack, Windsor, July, Titus, Phillis [alt: Phyllis], Cretia, Hetty, Washington, Sharper, Sue, Jacob, Betty, Silvia, Rakey, Bella, Matilda, Charity & Addam [alt: Adam]…” as well as a 500-acre tract of land in Liberty County granted to John O. Baker with the exception of 10 acres in the north part of that tract “which is a settlement made by John Minton which said excepted ten acres was conveyed to John Minton & Rosina [alt: Rosena] Minton his wife.” The 500-acre tract was bounded southeast by land belonging to Charlton Hines, north and west by land belonging to John Minton and by vacant land on the other sides. Witnessed by David Anderson and William J. Way, J.I.C.L.C. Recorded in Liberty County Superior Court on January 19, 1836. [NOTE: Deed was marked as satisfied in full as of 1 March 1849, and satisfaction recorded on March 17 1849.]
