On January 16, 1836, Joseph Austin, Liberty County, leased to Ann E. Mara, also of Liberty County, “four horses, and the following named negroes – twenty nine in number, Lancaster [alt: Lancaster], Sarah, Flora, Little George, Candace, Sukey, Amey [alt: Amy], Isabell, Salley, Caleb, Venus, Miley, Delia, Salley, Big George, Lucy, Tom, Dembo, Bella, Harry, Little Sarah, Little Binah, Ned, Cretia, Henry, Stephen, Major, Rose & Adam and also all the provisions that shall then be on the plantation the horses to be taken good care of, and the negroes to be well fed & clothed, by the said Ann E. Mara, and the said Ann E. Mara, for and in consideration of the hire of said negroes and horses for the term of twelve month from the first day of March next, promises & engages to pay to the said Joseph Austin the sum of fifteen hundred dollars, good & lawful money of the State of Georgia, and to return the said negroes and horses to the said Joseph Austin or his lawful representative on the first day of March in the year of our Lord eighteen hundred and thirty seven, or sooner if she should think proper so to do.” Witnessed by Josehua Sanford [alt: Sandiford].
