On February 5, 1835, Bartholomew A. Busby, Liberty County, Georgia, used as collateral on a promissory note of $2300 to Henry J. Ripley of Newton, Massachusetts, “ten negro slaves called Sam, Tom, Phillis [alt: Phyllis], Chloe [alt: Cloe], Cate, Mariah, Anthony, Binah, Diana and Beasly [alt: Beasley], together with the issue of the females…” Witnessed by Oliver W. Stevens, Josiah P. Stevens. Probated by Josiah P. Stevens on April 27, 1835, and recorded in Liberty County Superior Court on May 5, 1835.
