On April 7, 1834, John W. Stacy, of Liberty County, appointed John G. Baker his agent and attorney “to manage feed cloathe [SIC] and support the following named Slaves viz Joe Bristol Nejah [alt: Neger, Negah] & Nanny together with the issue of the females, for and during the natural life of the said John G. Baker, it being premised that the said Baker shall never hire or in any manner dispose of the said Negroes, but shall always keep them in his own possession and under his own control, and on the plantation which he now resides, and it being further premised that if the said Baker should by any or unforeseen contingency, be unable or unwilling to comply with the above conditions, then this power of attorney shall terminate and become null and void…” The deed further said that as long as Baker was “managing, clothing & supporting said Negroes” he was entitled to keep the “neat proceeds in money of the labour of said Slaves…” The deed was not to be changed by John W. Stacy’s death, and was to be binding on his heirs, as long as the conditions were complied with and as long as Baker remained alive.

On the previous page of the deed book, John G. Baker, planter of Liberty County, had sold to John W. Stacy for $1000 all the tracts of land on which he resided, called “Liberty Hall,” being on a branch of the Midway Swamp and comprised of five adjoining tracts originally granted to John Baker, Samusel Jeans, William Baker, Thomas Shepard and Richard F. Baker for a total of 1084 acres bounded west, south and east by land belonging to Richard F. Baker, estate of James Stacy, estate of John N. Way and estate of William Norman. Added to the sale was all other land to which Baker might be entitled.
