Copy

Hinesville, 2d May 1842

Whereas John Jones & Joseph Jones agree to leave to the undersigned, the appraisement or valuation of a certain lot of Negroes twelve in number, named as follows, Bristol, March, Trim, Affee, Troup, Georgia, Joe, Van Buren, Charles, Little Affee a child, Rosan and Mag, which Negroes the said Joseph Jones has a lifetime estate in, but the said John Jones is now willing to sell in free simple to the said Joseph Jones, relinquishing all his right title or claim forever, for the sum which may be agreed on by us thus appointed as appraisers.

And whereas, Capt. Joseph Jones & his son John Jones have already agreed that the above named Negroes are worth in fee simple Four thousand three hundred & fifty dollars ($4350) valued as follows:

Bristol $500, March $500, Trim $500, Affy $400, Troup $300, Georgia $400, Joe $200, Van Buren $200, Charles $500, Little Affee a child $50, Rosan $400 and Mag $400, making the above sum of $4350. After mature reflection we agree that the lifetime estate of Captain Jones is equal to one third the estimated value of the above property & therefore say that the sum of Fourteen hundred and fifty dollars should be deducted from the whole sum of four thousand three hundred & fifty dollars, leaving the remainders of twenty nine hundred dollars as the sum to be paid by Capt. Joseph Jones for a fee simple title from said John Jones.

Signed, Charles West
W. Maxwell } Appraisers

[p. 393]

Joseph Jones agrees to add one hundred dollars to the above valuation of twenty nine hundred dollars making the sum of three thousand dollars to be paid John Jones for the above named negroes. Assented to & signed by

John Jones
Jos. Jones

The foregoing valuation and division of Negroes between Joseph Jones and his children Mrs. Mary Jones and John Jones confirmed by us the parties interested this fourteenth day of May in the year of our Lord eighteen hundred & forty two.

[Signed: Mary Jones
John Jones
